Consulting Overview
Mid-America is routinely engaged to perform the Management Consulting services summarized briefly below:

  • Operation's Assessments
    • Evaluate mine/quarry operations, historical performance, mine plans and budgets. Includes due-diligence investigations of potential acquisitions.
  • Feasibility Studies
    • Demonstrate project's economic viability and identify risks and opportunities impacting future performance and profitability. Includes traditional business development investigations.
  • Market Studies
    • Determine mine's/quarry's competitive market position, evaluate existing and future market supply versus demand, or business expansion opportunities.
  • Strategic Business Plans
    • Plan development, or confirmation of business's plan. Typically utilize a combination of operation's assessments, feasibility studies, and/or market studies to develop long-term business plans and pro forma financial statements.
  • Liability Transfers
    • Quantify the extent of the existing reclamation liability (both physical and financial) and develop and implement a plan to reduce the exposure.
    • Typical plan includes a reverse sale of the affected property combined with a definitive transfer of the liability by means of a combination of contractual obligations, permit and bond transfer, and liability insurance.

  • Horizon Natural Resources
    • Strategic Operation's & Financial Assessment of All Eastern Coal Mining Operations (East Kentucky, West Virginia). 17 million tons of annual sales and $470 million of revenue.
    • Comprehensive assessment including site inspections and reviews of historical performance, mine plans, budgets and capital requirements, reclamation plans and activities, and management culture.
  • L. R. Chapman & Bluegrass Silica
    • Feasibility Study to determine the economic viability of the company's plans to expand its clay operations to include development of a large silica sand deposit. Study performed to obtain project financing (a bank loan).
    • Included an assessment of market demand and pricing, quality characteristics, development costs, mining costs and capital requirements. Also provided long-term pro forma financial statements.
  • Massey Energy Company
    • Feasibility Study to determine the development potential of an eastern Tennessee mineral property.
    • Included an assessment of development costs, mining costs and sales potential.
  • Confidential Construction Materials Co.
    • Comprehensive Market Study to apprise opportunities to materially increase annual sales of two acquisition targets (two quarries being considered for acquisition in Illinois).
    • Evaluated current and future market balance, and the competitive position of the two targets.
  • Confidential Construction Materials Co.
    • Comprehensive Market Study for a newly acquired aggregates company in the Indianapolis market. Primary objective was to ascertain sales potential for long-term mine planning and budgeting, as well as capital equipment selection.
    • Studied current and future market demand versus supply, and the competitive position of the two targets.
  • Vulcan / Triton Coal Company LLC
    • Feasibility Study to determine the viability of developing a large underground coal deposit located in southern Illinois.
  • El Paso Power Services Company
    • Contract Assessment to determine the potential for profitably restructuring long-term fuel supply contracts.
    • Assessed several long-term contracts between coal companies and several large utilities.
